The relocation industry is almost entirely a post-World War II phenomenon, helped along by the change in societal attitudes regarding moving prompted, in part, by returning GIs who married or began their college education in communities several miles from their hometowns.
During the rapid-growth era for business in the late 1950s and early 1960s, corporations found it necessary to transfer employees to meet their suddenly expanding staffing needs. The corporate obligations to meet the needs of these mobile employees became increasingly more challenging during the next couple of decades.
In the 1970s, very dramatic changes took place in real estate and
mortgage markets, relocation costs, and perhaps most significantly,
changing employee attitudes, necessitating a total reassessment of
corporate philosophy with respect to employee mobility. Employees
were no longer willing to "invest in the future" by paying
part of the cost to move. The additional assistance initiated during
this period to combat employee reluctance was revealed in the constantly
rising average cost to relocate a homeowning employee: $7,800 in 1973,
$10,444 in 1976, $15,808 in 1979, $31,000 in 1982, and $55,000 - $75,000
in 2006.
In fact, costs did not begin to stabilize until 1982-1983, when interest rates were more reasonable and most companies mortgage assistance programs were already in place. Currently, the cost to relocate a homeowning employee is $50K-75K
.
